My first acquaintance with wearable electronics happened quite a long time ago, back in 1999. How's the acquaintance? I just saw this device only in a store window. The gadget was called Samsung SPH-WP10.

First, we'll talk about what software the smartwatch runs on. The most common operating system on watches at the moment is Android Wear from Google. The vast majority of people on the market run Android Wear.

ANDROID WEAR

Android Wear is an operating system for various wearable electronics, presented by Google at the Google I/O 2014 forum. Designed for various wearable gadgets and smart watches. The first smart watches to use this OS were LG G Watch, Samsung Gear Live and Motorola Moto 360. In the future, Google is going to actively develop its OS for wearable devices.

Android Wear is compatible with both square and round watch displays.

On February 23, 2014, two new branches of the Tizen system were presented - for smart TVs and wearable gadgets. Initially, the platform for wearable gadgets was called Tizen Mobile Micro, later the name was changed to Tizen Wearable.

On September 3, 2014, at the IFA exhibition in Germany, the third generation of smart watches from Samsung was announced - the Gear S model on Tizen.

Until recently, the main disadvantage of Tizen OS was the fact that smartwatches running Tizen OS itself were only compatible with Samsung smartphones. By the way, smart watches on Tizen OS are currently produced only by Samsung itself. But with the release of a new smartwatch called “Gear S2” the situation has changed for the better. Gear S2 now works on most smartphones running Android OS 4.4 and above. The main advantage of smart watches on Tizen OS is their more advanced technical characteristics. And the Gear S smart watch has the ability to install a SIM card, and these smart watches also have a built-in speaker and microphone, which makes them completely independent of the smartphone.

WATCHOS

The application store deserves special attention. It already has a huge number of different dials and programs. In terms of content, this application store surpasses GearApps from Samsung and is second only to Android Wear.

Smartwatches from lesser-known manufacturers stand out. Smart watch brands such as: DEXP, Belsis, Bizzaro, CooKooWatch, teXet, etc. run on their own OS. The consequence of this approach is usually the absence of an application store for the smartwatch itself. Simply put, we will not be able to upload additional dial skins or various applications to the smartwatch. These smartwatches typically have very few watch faces to choose from and few different apps installed, so we'll be left with what the manufacturer itself offers us.

PROTECTION AGAINST EXTERNAL FACTORS

Since we started talking about wearable electronics, I think it’s worth talking about how manufacturers protect their products. This paragraph of the article applies to smart watches and fitness bracelets.

The IP rating (Ingress Protection) was introduced by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC-International Electrotechnical Commission). The rating consists of two numbers and determines the ability of a particular gadget to resist the penetration of solid particles and liquids. The first number indicates the level of protection against dust and other solid particles, the second number indicates the level of protection against liquid penetration.

Most smart watches on the market have a round shape, this is understandable; classics are always in fashion. Alcatel, Samsung, LG, Motorola produce smart watches in this particular form factor. The first smartwatch on Android Wear was released by Motorola and they were called “Moto 360”. Smart watches in a round design look like ordinary mechanical watches on the wrist and do not really give themselves away in appearance.

The second popular form factor is a smartwatch with a square screen. These watches are produced by: Asus, Bizzaro, Dexp, Pebble, Sony, Apple, Texet, and other manufacturers. Of course, before buying a smart watch, you can come to the store and try the device on your hand. In turn, smart watches with a square design look like regular electronic watches.

It seems to me that smart watches in round and square cases are suitable for those who do not want to stand out in appearance or are not ready to use a gadget of a non-standard shape.

Personally, I don’t particularly like round and square smartwatches. All my life I have worn round mechanical and square electronic watches, and you know, this shape has already become boring and I want some kind of novelty in appearance. And for such lovers of everything unusual, Samsung produces a smart watch called “Gear S”. This device has a rectangular shape, and the screen itself is quite curved and follows the shape of your wrist. Such smart watches are certainly unique and attract the attention of others, I recommend purchasing them.

Fitness bracelets, in turn, have more compact sizes, this is understandable, since a massive gadget on the hand in some cases can interfere with exercise. The most common shape in fitness bracelets is a rectangle or a small oval. In second place is the circle, but there are few such fitness bracelets on sale.

Often, manufacturers even produce fitness bracelets that seem to consist of one bracelet. I like the last option better, since the device is compact and you can hardly feel it on your hand.

STRAPS AND BRACELETS

In fact, there are not so many materials from which manufacturers make straps/bracelets for their devices. These are mainly silicone, metal and leather.

Let's consider each material separately.

LEATHER STRAPS

Already from the name it is clear that this material is premium in the manufacture of a strap. As a rule, leather is used only by well-known companies such as LG or Asus. Lesser-known manufacturers may use a leather substitute. Of course, a leather strap on a smart watch looks solid and rich, and accordingly, smart watches with such a strap are more expensive.

A leather strap has several disadvantages: the material wears out quite quickly and loses its presentation. And of course, you shouldn’t get a leather strap wet, since frequent immersion has a detrimental effect on the leather itself. For the same reason, you will not find fitness bracelets in leather on sale.

As a rule, leather straps have a standard 20 mm. The strap and, if desired, the strap itself can be bought at any watch store and changed yourself. These straps have external latches, which makes replacing the strap more convenient and simple.

From personal experience, I will say that I don’t particularly like smart watches with leather straps, since the appearance is quickly lost and often the leather itself can be quite rough. I had this situation with the LG Watch Urbane smartwatch. The leather in the strap was very thick and rough, the strap rubbed my hand.

METAL BRACELET

First of all, I will say that metal bracelets that are installed in smart watches also usually have a standard mounting width of 20 mm. Accordingly, we can change the bracelets to any others. You can exchange a metal bracelet for a leather strap and vice versa.

But not all metal bracelets can be exchanged for any other. For example, Sony produces the SmartWatch 3 smart watch, where the metal strap is combined with a frame for the gadget itself. Therefore, we can only exchange the bracelet for the original one.

As you understand, a smart watch with a metal bracelet can be safely immersed in water; nothing will happen to the metal.

Well, metal bracelets in themselves also look expensive and presentable. Plus, the metal adds a pleasant heaviness to the wearable gadget and such smart watches look very impressive on the hand.

SILICONE OR RUBBER

And of course, the most popular material for making straps is a special type of rubber or silicone. Smart watches with such straps are usually cheaper than analogues in leather or metal.

Smart watches with such straps can also be safely immersed in water; this material is ideal for an aquatic environment. And of course, all fitness bracelets come with such straps. When playing sports, we move actively and as a result we sweat. After training, rinse your smart watch or fitness bracelet in water and that’s it, no problems!

But smart watches with such straps have one significant point. As a rule, such straps cannot be exchanged for metal or leather; there is no corresponding 20 mm. fastenings

With rare exceptions, the smartwatch manufacturer itself can produce replacement straps, but this happens quite rarely, and finding such straps on sale is quite problematic.

SMART WATCH FUNCTIONALITY

Here we come to the most important point of this article. So why do you still need a smart watch? Is this a useful gadget or just an expensive and useless toy?

The main purpose of a smart watch is to complement the functions of your smartphone, and in some cases, completely replace the smartphone itself.

But how can a smart watch fully replace a smartphone? Yes, very simple! There are smart watches in which you can install a full-fledged SIM card. Such gadgets are produced by Samsung, Bizzaro, and recently Oukitel announced similar smart watches. By installing a SIM card in such gadgets, you can completely abandon your bulky smartphone. After such a simple procedure, the smart watch turns into a full-fledged smartphone on your hand.
