The watch is like a phone with a camera and a call. Smart watches for children

Smart watches have not yet gained such popularity as smartphones. But they undoubtedly have a number of advantages. Especially for people leading an active lifestyle. The advantage of a smartwatch with a phone function is its compactness. But there are also disadvantages. The audibility of such watches is often low, the screen size is too small.

Types of smart watches

All types of smart watches can be divided into 2 groups:

Smart watch with SIM card for everyday life. Ideally, they combine a watch, phone, camera, connect to the Internet, and play audio and video files.

The sports device, in addition to the above functions, is equipped with GPS navigation, heart rate monitor, and weather sensors. Their body is much stronger and protected from moisture and dust.

A children's watch with a SIM card that allows you to keep in touch with your child and monitor his movements.

Smart watch functions

Modern smartwatches with a SIM card run on the Android Wear operating system. Mobile communications are carried out using a SIM card from one of the operators, which is placed in a special slot. Watches with two SIM cards are not yet on sale.

When you receive a call, you can accept the call and put the watch to your ear. But this is not always convenient. To avoid twisting it, especially when riding a bicycle or driving, turn on the volume loudly. True, in this case, others will listen to the conversation.

Smart watches have additional functions:

  • Displaying information about calls and received messages on the watch screen
  • Ability to use measuring instruments (thermometer, pedometer, stopwatch, barometer)
  • The S Voice function allows you to set various commands (dial a number, sound reply to a message)
  • Ability to shoot video (not all watches)
  • Wide selection of watch faces
  • Can be used with a smartphone.

Wristwatches with a SIM card have an original design. They hold a charge for about 5 hours with normal use. If you “link” them with a smartphone, the operating time will increase to 8 hours.

The functions of children's watches are slightly different from those of adults:

  • The quartz movement does not require recharging, just place it on the base
  • Can receive calls from 3 pre-programmed numbers
  • The “parental control” function allows you to monitor your child’s time
  • Determine the coordinates of its location
  • The case is impervious to moisture and dust

The first smart watch models

Neptune Pine is one of the first smartwatches, created in 2013. Despite the popularity it enjoyed among consumers, it was not very convenient to use. They worked for less than a day and were too large to fit well on the hand. Audibility was poor.

The watch was based on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, had a 2-core processor, and had 512 megapixels of RAM. There were even 2 cameras, main and front. The device had to be frequently removed from the strap and put back on.

The era of mini-gadgets, unusual and super fashionable devices that take over some of the functions of smartphones, is marked by the emergence of increasingly popular “smart watches”. Stylish and functional, they have become not just a trend, but also a convenient accessory for people living in the crazy rhythm of big cities. How to choose a smart watch so that it successfully performs the functions you need and meets the price-quality criterion? Reliability, appearance, convenience and ease of use, battery life are the main factors for a successful purchase.

What are smart watches for?

Inexpensive options from Chinese manufacturers, fashionable and expensive Apple Watch, high-status Withings Activite, popular Android watches Samsung Gear, Sony Smartwatch provide enormous choice for potential buyers. What features of a smartwatch will you need, and what should you consider when purchasing? If you are a supporter of wearing bracelets or other devices like fitness trackers, you have to use a GPS system, or you love new-fangled trendy devices, smart watches will be an excellent solution to a lot of problems.

The significant size of a smartphone is not always convenient for constant use. A smart watch will become a reason to take your mobile phone out of your purse or pocket less often, notifying the owner about incoming messages and bank newsletters. The combined functionality of an alarm clock, a personal “fitness trainer” (due to the functions of a pedometer), a remote device, and an organizer are good reasons why a modern person needs a smartwatch.

What is a smart watch

Smart watches with phone functions, the ability to make calls or communicate on social networks are currently in the development plans of leading gadget manufacturers. You can easily control music, receive notifications, unlock your phone, make voice messages or notes, and finally find out the time using this smart mini device. Being a kind of smartphone interface, smart watches allow you to save time by simplifying access to popular functions of mobile phones.

Most variations on the theme of smart watches have a variety of characteristics, united by a common indicator: the ability to minimize the use of the phone when receiving messages, notifications and save phone battery power.

Characteristics of smart watches

Depending on the needs of individual groups of potential users, smart watches are presented in several categories:

  • for business people;
  • for buyers who are actively involved in sports and take care of their own health;
  • for fashionable, stylish young men and women who prefer to live “in trend”.

The main characteristics that play an important role when choosing a particular model include appearance, versatility, quality, reliability of materials, protection from dust, water and external influences, battery life for smartwatches without recharging. The possibility of using third-party programs - from readers (someone has to be lucky in the exam) to barometers and navigators - affects the cost and the ability of the gadget’s battery to “hold” a charge.

Most smartwatch manufacturers use the Android or Android Wear platforms. The ones that stand out are the recently launched AppleWatch with iOS, as well as devices with custom-developed software and platform, such as PebbleSteel. A significant advantage of the latter is the need to recharge the battery no more than once every 5-6 days.

Functionality

Most smart device models on the market today are “tied” to a smartphone, without which work will be limited to the capabilities of a fitness tracker and an ordinary watch with an electronic display. The capabilities of Samsung Gear S and LG Watch Urbane LTE are more extensive: they have a built-in communication module, and connection with the phone is not mandatory for them. Communication with a smartphone in smartwatches is provided via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi at access points.

Functions of smart watches:

  • music control;
  • ability to download Google Play tracks;
  • listening to downloaded music using a headset;
  • counting steps taken (kilometers) and calories burned;
  • measurement of pulse, pressure;
  • alarm clock with the ability to control the light and deep phases of sleep, provided it is on your hand at night;
  • the ability to accept or refuse a call;
  • voice response to a message.

When deciding which smartwatch to choose, consider the model and operating system of your smartphone. With an Android base, you can buy any device on the market with Android Wear or pure Android. Stylish and fashionable phones with a “bitten apple” are combined only with expensive and no less stylish Apple Watch. Among the “universal” devices, only Pebble is represented, which successfully works with both iOS, Android, and Windows Phone.

Design

Until recently, the usual characteristics of color and appearance when choosing a wristwatch played an insignificant role for lovers of smart mini-gadgets. A sporty or semi-sporty style, a simple display, and a minimum of sophisticated bells and whistles distinguish mass-sector models:

The classic round case, the use of familiar metal, leather and glass for the LG G Watch Urban, Motorola Moto 360, Samsung Gear S2, stylish design attract the attention of potential buyers, despite the relatively high price. As representatives of the premium segment, it is worth highlighting the Apple Watch Edition in 18-karat gold “packaging” or the strict, elegant Withings Activite with a round case and laconic design.

Among the representatives of beautiful smartwatches with a “sporty character”, we should note the Adidasmi Coach Smart Run, which will help you create a personal training plan, prompt and “show” in the form of short clips how to correctly perform exercises of various types of load: strength, cardio, aerobic. In addition, they will carefully monitor the condition of your body and its reaction to sports as a tonometer, tracker, and heart rate monitor.

Protection from moisture and dust

An important parameter, given the high cost of smartwatches. In some models, sapphire glass (Sony Smartwatch 3) helps to avoid scratches and damage to the display screen, which increases the price, but increases the service life of the gadget. You can find out the degree of protection against water and dust of a smart watch by the code indicated in the technical specifications: IPxx, where the first x means the level of anti-dust protection, and the second indicates moisture resistance.

With a dust protection rating of 6, your smart watch will be protected from the smallest dust particles, and you can travel with it across the Sahara during dust storms. It is possible not to remove the smart device while taking a shower if the last digit in the protective characteristic is 5 or 6, and for swimming, choose models with a seven or eight. Most smartwatch models from leading manufacturers have IP67 or IP68 ratings.

Display Specifications

The body of the device is presented in the form of a rectangle or a classic circle, but the color and characteristics of the “wrist” mini-monitor have the following features:

1. Screen color.

  • Monochrome. Such smartwatch models are controlled using external hardware buttons.
  • Color. The disadvantages include loss of image clarity and brightness in bright sunlight.

2. Availability of sensors.

  • Touchscreen. It is easy to use, but if the glass is damaged, problems with the sensitivity of the sensors may occur.
  • "Push-button" screen. Smart watches are controlled through external mechanical buttons, which makes accessing information difficult or increases the response time to incoming messages. More practical and durable.

Strap

Sports models are equipped with a rubber strap. They are produced using hypoallergenic rubber that does not cause stains or irritation. Some models for everyday use come with an interchangeable set of straps made of leather or rubber in different colors. Manufacturers of smart watches produce products with a metal bracelet (Huawei Watch Classic made of stainless alloys, SONY Smart Watch 2) or a plastic strap (Pebble, Casio).

Battery

The more functionality a smartwatch model has, the greater the problem with uninterrupted battery life. Basic models with limited service are equipped with a battery life of about 2 years, after which it will need to be replaced. The leader is Pebble with an electronic ink screen, in which the watch battery needs to be recharged once every 5 days. Multifunctional ASUS Zen Watch, SONY Smart Watch, etc. the models will be able to work in active mode from 25 to 3 hours due to the small size of the case and the not very energy-intensive battery.

When deciding which smartwatch to choose, pay attention to the charging port. In some models it is universal (microUSB standard), while for Samsung Gear, ASUS Zen Watch, Apple Watch a special adapter is required. The Motorola Moto 360 comes with a charging base that turns this beautiful and stylish smartwatch into an equally stylish desk alarm clock.

Where to buy smart watch

The rapidly developing smartwatch market is releasing up to 5 new models every quarter (thanks to our Chinese friends). Without getting confused when choosing the available assortment, you can purchase a quality item in the price range you are interested in:

  1. By visiting specialized stores of “smart goods” off-line. The advantages of such a purchase include: the opportunity to touch, see in reality and test the model you like, and get expert advice. The disadvantages include: the price includes not only the cost of the watch model (and it is quite high), but also the store’s overhead costs in the form of rent, employee salaries and covering operating expenses.
  2. Buy smart watches online from representatives of trading companies or from a catalog in the online showrooms of official manufacturers. The price of such products will be lower than in real stores, but there is a possibility of running into an unscrupulous seller or a low-quality product.

Manufacturers

  • Samsung
  • Apple
  • Alcatel
  • Casio
  • Motorola
  • Pebble
  • Polar

Among the countries producing smartwatches are Germany, Denmark, China, USA, Finland, Sweden, South Korea, Japan, Italy. Russian companies can also boast of their own versions of smart gadgets. The development of Explay is represented by the Explay N1 Watch model (cost 3,000 rubles), which is distinguished by the following characteristics:

  • the ability to call from the watch;
  • write and send text messages;
  • listen to music tracks.

Price

When choosing a smartwatch model, the decisive factor is the price characteristic. Brand models Samsung, Asus, Sony, Adidas start from 200 euros. The cost of mass-sector models from Chinese manufacturers ranges from $90 to $150 per unit. The sports version of the Apple Watch went on sale at a price of $394, while the luxury model of the same company, the gold-plated Apple Watch Edition, costs $10-17,000.

When deciding to buy a smartwatch, evaluate the “quality-functionality-price” ratio, so as not to buy an expensive trinket or a cheap fake, which will go “on the shelf” due to uselessness or poor quality work.

Smartwatch rating

The rating of models that are in greatest demand among buyers will help you understand the abundance of offers on the smart watch market. One of the most popular products in electronics stores lately is a smart watch-phone. A wearable gadget with which you will not only find out the exact time, but also not miss important application notifications or calls, you will be able to track the number of steps taken, and the functions of more expensive solutions can completely amaze the imagination.

For example, many models are presented with support for SIM cards, which allows you to make calls directly from the watch - a rather interesting and useful feature. Other solutions have received GPS, which tracks the location of the watch owner and shows the route taken. If you are also interested in a watch-phone, then read on, we will tell you about several popular models in an affordable price category.

This is one of the most affordable watches on the market, boasting a phone-inspired calling feature. Thanks to their low cost and not the worst characteristics, they have become very popular among users who want a smart watch, but are not eager to pay a serious amount of money for offers from A-brands. The design of the Aplus GV18 is copied from the Gear S 3 from Samsung, its Chinese origin is immediately obvious - camera, speaker, support for SIM and memory cards, a bunch of functions, most of which are not clear for what.

From characteristics These watch-phones can be distinguished:

  • a case made of not the worst metal, complemented by a silicone strap;
  • a 1.54-inch touch screen surrounded by a decently wide black frame (when the display is active, everything doesn’t look as attractive as we would like);
  • processor from MTK – 6260A;
  • 64 MB of RAM, 128 MB of permanent memory, expandable with memory cards;
  • even a 0.3 megapixel camera;
  • Bluetooth 3.0 for connecting the watch to the phone, as well as, which is surprising considering the cost;
  • 450 mAh battery;
  • pedometer, sleep and calorie monitoring, and other functions typical of this class of devices.

To bear the proud name of a watch-phone, Aplus GV18 acquired support for SIM cards and, as a result, the function of making calls. The card is inserted into a special tray, calls are made in the same way as from a smartphone: we enter a number or select it from the phone book and talk. But without a Bluetooth headset it looks strange, and not very convenient.

In addition to making calls, the Chinese watch phone can take photos and record video - the quality leaves much to be desired, but still. Naturally, they show notifications from a smartphone, which for many is the main function of a smartwatch, displacing all others. The Aplus GV18 also received a few fitness capabilities: a pedometer, sleep monitoring, calorie counting, a reminder of prolonged immobility and some others.

Aplus GV18, despite the disadvantages that, of course, exists (not the best screen, problems with applications, battery life that leaves much to be desired), will appeal to many users. For 1000-1500 rubles, which is what sellers on AliExpress and GearBest demand for them, this is an excellent watch with phone functions that will be a good option for your first acquaintance with this kind of device.

Smart Watch Celiadwn I 9

Another representative of the affordable category in high-quality performance. As in the previous case, one of the “tricks” was support for SIM cards. The manufacturer managed to make the Celiadwn I9 in a neat shape with a rather attractive design. High-quality materials for the case and strap were used. The watch-phone will look great on both men’s and women’s hands, and the abundance of multi-colored straps is also pleasing.

  • metal case with corrugated silicone strap;
  • good 1.54-inch touch screen with a resolution of 240x240 pixels;
  • energy efficient MTK2502 processor;
  • 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of permanent memory, expandable with TF cards (maximum 16 GB);
  • 0.3 MP camera located on the right side;
  • Bluetooth 4.0 for pairing with Android and iOS devices;
  • 250 mAh battery, from which you shouldn’t expect miracles;
  • standard set of functions: pedometer, sleep monitoring, reminders and so on.

The watch phone supports the installation of one micro SIM card, which will operate in GSM850/900/1800/1900 MHz frequencies. Dialing is carried out as standard; a phone book is available, which will be synchronized with the contacts of your smartphone. Connection to other devices is made via the Bluetooth interface. For full operation, you will have to install an application with which you can track various indicators.

There is practically nothing to highlight from other functions. There is a fairly accurate pedometer, sleep monitoring, and support for notifications from smartphone applications. The watch was not left without the ability to remotely control some phone functions, for example, the camera or music player.

The Celiadwn I9 may not be the best in its class, but it deserves attention. You can buy a watch-phone from one of the sellers on AliExpress, where their cost is about 4,000 rubles.

KingWear KW88

A watch-phone from a more expensive price segment, which has more interesting characteristics and a prettier design. , both look and feel expensive, received a full version of Android 5.1, which makes them more of a wrist smartphone than a watch. They support 3G networks, which allows you to surf the Internet and watch videos online, but doing this is not very convenient on 1.39 inches.

  • good metal that does not lose its attractiveness even after a year of use, and straps made of high-quality rubber;
  • not just any 1.39-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 400x400 pixels and OGS technology;
  • 4-core MTK6580 chip, which is still installed in many budget smartphones;
  • as much as 512 MB of RAM;
  • 4 GB drive;
  • 2 megapixel camera;
  • Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi – interfaces for all occasions;
  • a 400 mAh battery, which, given such a system, will definitely not last long;
  • pedometer, heart rate sensor and other useful functions.

KingWear KW88 is truly a watch-phone that can easily become a full-fledged replacement for a smartphone. It is clear that they are not so convenient for watching movies or using a browser, but you can make calls and write SMS. Android 5.1 allows you to install thousands of applications and even games. High-performance hardware ensures high operating speed, and the memory is enough for several hundred songs. In addition, there is support for GPS, which allows you to use the watch as a navigator.

Their belonging to the watch-phone class can be emphasized by the support of a SIM card, which works not only in GSM networks, but also supports 3G, which provides Internet access at fairly high speeds. There are two popular wireless interfaces for pairing with other devices: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Well, in addition, there is a whole list of fitness capabilities, starting with a pedometer and ending with a heart rate sensor.

KingWear KW88, which is not surprising, is more expensive than its analogues - about 5,500 rubles on AliExpress and GearBest. And the price is justified considering the characteristics. The only drawback of the watch may be autonomy - a 400 mAh battery is simply not enough for all components.

LEMFO LF18

The Chinese company Lemfo has more than once surprised customers with quite high-quality products, which at the same time attracted with their affordable price. Recently, the model range was replenished with the LF18 solution - a smartwatch in a classic design with support for SIM cards and a heart rate sensor.

  • The case material is metal, the strap is made of silica gel
  • 1.3-inch oval display with a resolution of 240x240 pixels
  • Energy efficient MTK2502C processor
  • 64 MB RAM
  • 128 MB of permanent memory + expandable with TF cards with a maximum capacity of up to 16 GB
  • Bluetooth for pairing the watch with a smartphone
  • 340 mAh battery
  • pedometer, sleep monitoring, long-term immobility reminder, heart rate sensor, calorie counting, etc.

The stylish design of the LEMFO LF18 case complements the beautiful and user-friendly interface. There really are quite a few functions: there is a calculator, remote control of a smartphone, and, of course, receiving notifications. The SIM card is inserted into a special tray, only GSM communication is supported, 3G is not announced, and there are no tools for Internet access. There is a voice control option, which allows you to very quickly make, for example, a reminder about an upcoming meeting.

The LEMFO watch phone comes with a high-quality application that opens up additional possibilities. There is no fault with the accuracy of the sensors: they measure pulse and count steps no worse than the closest analogues. But the battery, like most competitors on the same platform, discharges quickly, especially if you use the watch with a SIM card. Be that as it may, LEMFO LF18 is an interesting specimen that is worth the 3,000 rubles that sellers on AliExpress demand for it.

№1 G8

At the beginning of summer, company No. 1, quite well known on the market, expanded its own line of smart watches. Few users have had time to evaluate the G8 (the model has only just appeared in online stores), but the stated characteristics at a price of 2,000 rubles make it worth purchasing. Optimism is added by the success of previous watches from No. 1, which managed to offer high quality, nice design and a decent set of functions.

  • The case material is metal, the straps, available in four colors, are made of rubber
  • typical oval display with a diagonal of 1.3 inches and a resolution of 240x240 pixels
  • MTK2502 processor, beloved by manufacturers of budget Smart Watches
  • minimum RAM and permanent memory: 32 MB
  • Bluetooth version 4.0 for pairing with Android and iOS devices
  • 300 mAh battery
  • Heart rate sensor, pedometer, sleep monitoring, calorie counting, blood pressure measurement

No. 1 G8 is declared by the manufacturer as a 3-in-1 smartwatch. The first thing they are ready to offer the user is a watch mode, which is really surprising. The second mode is more interesting - G8 as a fitness bracelet. Finally, the watch can play the role of a phone - nano-SIM support is announced. They can only work on 2G networks, and in phone mode you shouldn’t expect the G8 to last more than three days.

I’m very pleased with the presence of a heart rate monitor, and not just any kind. The company points to the use of a sensor, as in the famous Mi Band 2 bracelet from Xiaomi, which should ensure high accuracy of measurements. In addition, the characteristics state the ability to change blood pressure - it is difficult to say how efficient it will be. And, of course, the watch-phone can be paired with a smartphone.

No. 1 G8 can now be bought for 2000 rubles on AliExpress or GearBest. Some sellers may offer a small discount in honor of the start of sales. It’s difficult to predict the success of a new product, but given the popularity of the company’s other products, failure is unlikely.

Good afternoon, dear ladies and gentlemen! Wearable electronics are quickly becoming part of everyday life, capturing the minds of ordinary users and emptying our wallets. How to choose the right device? But choose so that the future purchase brings only positive emotions to its owner! In this article we will talk about how to choose various wearable electronics, namely smart watches or, as some call it, “smart watches” and fitness bracelets. This article will be a kind of assistant when choosing a particular device.

If you had told me a few years ago that I would have a gadget in appearance indistinguishable from an ordinary electronic watch, which could be used to: make calls, access the Internet, play, listen to music, measure pulse, etc., then I would said that this person takes me for an idiot. But these are the realities and I would like to state that this person would have been right, and I would have been an idiot... for not believing him.

My first acquaintance with wearable electronics happened quite a long time ago, back in 1999. How's the acquaintance? I just saw this device only in a store window. The gadget was called Samsung SPH-WP10.

This is what the device looked like in real life...

In fact, this was the first attempt to create something unique and unusual. Samsung SPH-WP10 is the first, and still one of the few, watch-phone. The device, whose creation was inspired by science fiction films, was announced in 1999. Of course, by modern standards this gadget is very bulky (its thickness was 2 cm + an antenna protruding from the side, and its weight was 50 g), but at that time it was the smallest and lightest “wireless terminal”. But let’s not delve into the past, but let’s talk about how things are now with wearable electronics...

First, we'll talk about what software the smartwatch runs on. The most common operating system on watches at the moment is Android Wear from Google. The vast majority of people on the market run Android Wear.

ANDROID WEAR

Android Wear is an operating system for various wearable electronics, presented by Google at the Google I/O 2014 forum. Designed for various wearable gadgets and smart watches. The first smart watches to use this OS were LG G Watch, Samsung Gear Live and Motorola Moto 360. In the future, Google is going to actively develop its OS for wearable devices.

Android Wear is compatible with both square and round watch displays.

In August 2015, Google announced the release of a special mobile application for smartphones running the iOS operating system, thanks to which any smart watch based on Android Wear can be synchronized with the iPhone. Undoubtedly, this step on Google's part deserves nothing but praise.

For full operation and synchronization of smart watches on Android Wear, we will need to download the “Android Wear” application of the same name from the Play Store. The largest number of applications and different watch faces, plus extensive customization of the appearance of your smart watch - this is Android Wear.

As can be seen from the description, Android Wear is a fairly universal and promising OS for mobile electronics.

TIZEN OS

OS Tizen (read as “Taizen”), like Android, this OS is developed on the basis of Linux and can function on smartphones, tablets, and also on computers. Currently, this OS is being developed and developed quite actively. Soon, we will probably become unwitting witnesses to the moment when iOS and Android will have to make room a little in the mobile OS market in order to provide a place for the newcomer Tizen in the wearable electronics market. The name Tizen comes from Tie, activity from Rise, and meditation from Zen.

On February 23, 2014, two new branches of the Tizen system were presented - for smart TVs and wearable gadgets. Initially, the platform for wearable gadgets was called Tizen Mobile Micro, later the name was changed to Tizen Wearable.

On September 3, 2014, at the IFA exhibition in Germany, the third generation of smart watches from Samsung was announced - the Gear S model on Tizen.

Until recently, the main disadvantage of Tizen OS was the fact that smartwatches running Tizen OS itself were only compatible with Samsung smartphones. By the way, smart watches on Tizen OS are currently produced only by Samsung itself. But with the release of a new smartwatch called “Gear S2” the situation has changed for the better. Gear S2 now works on most smartphones running Android OS 4.4 and above. The main advantage of smart watches on Tizen OS is their more advanced technical characteristics. And the Gear S smart watch has the ability to install a SIM card, and these smart watches also have a built-in speaker and microphone, which makes them completely independent of the smartphone.

To fully operate a smartwatch on Tizen OS, you will need a proprietary application from Samsung called “Samsung Gear”. If this application is not on your smartphone, you can download it from the Galaxy Apps application store.

WATCHOS

Watch OS is an operating system developed by Apple to run on the Apple Watch. First released April 24, 2015. Watch OS supports apps developed with WatchKit. The main menu of the system is designed as a Carousel, which provides convenient access to any application. At first, the system allowed Apple's wearable gadget to be only a companion for applications running on the iPhone, but at the WWDC conference, applications were presented that could run on the Apple Watch independently of the phone.

Please note that the Apple Watch only works with Apple smartphones. And without the smartphone itself, these smart watches are simply useless.

PEBBLEOS

Smart watches from Pebble use their own developments on the FreeRTOS OS. FreeRTOS is a multitasking real-time operating system (RTOS) for embedded systems. Ported to 35 microprocessor architectures. Distributed under a modified GPL license with an exception that allows the developer to assign modified operating system code. The add-on over it is called Pebble OS and this is the only implementation of this system at the moment. By and large, there is no information specifically about Pebble OS as such.

The main advantage of Pebble smartwatches is their long battery life, thanks to the Memory LCD screen from Sharp. This screen is black and white, and more recently also color. This technology should not be confused with eInk screens, only the appearance is common.

Also, smart watches from Pebble are fully compatible with Apple products, which is a huge plus. Of course, these smart watches work great with smartphones running Android OS.

The application store deserves special attention. It already has a huge number of different dials and programs. In terms of content, this application store surpasses GearApps from Samsung and is second only to Android Wear.

Smartwatches from lesser-known manufacturers stand out. Smart watch brands such as: DEXP, Belsis, Bizzaro, CooKooWatch, teXet, etc. run on their own OS. The consequence of this approach is usually the absence of an application store for the smartwatch itself. Simply put, we will not be able to upload additional dial skins or various applications to the smartwatch. These smartwatches typically have very few watch faces to choose from and few different apps installed, so we'll be left with what the manufacturer itself offers us.

PROTECTION AGAINST EXTERNAL FACTORS

Since we started talking about wearable electronics, I think it’s worth talking about how manufacturers protect their products. This paragraph of the article applies to smart watches and fitness bracelets.

The IP rating (Ingress Protection) was introduced by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC-International Electrotechnical Commission). The rating consists of two numbers and determines the ability of a particular gadget to resist the penetration of solid particles and liquids. The first number indicates the level of protection against dust and other solid particles, the second number indicates the level of protection against liquid penetration.

In these screenshots you can see how the level of protection is distributed.

The first number indicates protection against particulate matter.

The second number indicates protection against moisture.

As a rule, the manufacturer indicates on the packaging whether the smartwatch is protected or not. Sometimes such information is placed on the back of the smartwatch case. For example, smart watches from Samsung, Sony, and Pebble can be completely immersed in water. But let’s say LG or Asus still do not recommend completely immersing their products in an aquatic environment, but you can wash your hands while wearing a smartwatch or accidentally get caught in the rain.

FORM FACTOR OF A WEARABLE DEVICE

Most smart watches on the market have a round shape, this is understandable; classics are always in fashion. Alcatel, Samsung, LG, Motorola produce smart watches in this particular form factor. The first smartwatch on Android Wear was released by Motorola and they were called “Moto 360”. Smart watches in a round design look like ordinary mechanical watches on the wrist and do not really give themselves away in appearance.

The second popular form factor is a smartwatch with a square screen. These watches are produced by: Asus, Bizzaro, Dexp, Pebble, Sony, Apple, Texet, and other manufacturers. Of course, before buying a smart watch, you can come to the store and try the device on your hand. In turn, smart watches with a square design look like regular electronic watches.

It seems to me that smart watches in round and square cases are suitable for those who do not want to stand out in appearance or are not ready to use a gadget of a non-standard shape.

Personally, I don’t particularly like round and square smartwatches. All my life I have worn round mechanical and square electronic watches, and you know, this shape has already become boring and I want some kind of novelty in appearance. And for such lovers of everything unusual, Samsung produces a smart watch called “Gear S”. This device has a rectangular shape, and the screen itself is quite curved and follows the shape of your wrist. Such smart watches are certainly unique and attract the attention of others, I recommend purchasing them.

Fitness bracelets, in turn, have more compact sizes, this is understandable, since a massive gadget on the hand in some cases can interfere with exercise. The most common shape in fitness bracelets is a rectangle or a small oval. In second place is the circle, but there are few such fitness bracelets on sale.

Often, manufacturers even produce fitness bracelets that seem to consist of one bracelet. I like the last option better, since the device is compact and you can hardly feel it on your hand.

STRAPS AND BRACELETS

In fact, there are not so many materials from which manufacturers make straps/bracelets for their devices. These are mainly silicone, metal and leather.

Let's consider each material separately.

LEATHER STRAPS

Already from the name it is clear that this material is premium in the manufacture of a strap. As a rule, leather is used only by well-known companies such as LG or Asus. Lesser-known manufacturers may use a leather substitute. Of course, a leather strap on a smart watch looks solid and rich, and accordingly, smart watches with such a strap are more expensive.

A leather strap has several disadvantages: the material wears out quite quickly and loses its presentation. And of course, you shouldn’t get a leather strap wet, since frequent immersion has a detrimental effect on the leather itself. For the same reason, you will not find fitness bracelets in leather on sale.

As a rule, leather straps have a standard 20 mm. The strap and, if desired, the strap itself can be bought at any watch store and changed yourself. These straps have external latches, which makes replacing the strap more convenient and simple.

From personal experience, I will say that I don’t particularly like smart watches with leather straps, since the appearance is quickly lost and often the leather itself can be quite rough. I had this situation with the LG Watch Urbane smartwatch. The leather in the strap was very thick and rough, the strap rubbed my hand.

METAL BRACELET

First of all, I will say that metal bracelets that are installed in smart watches also usually have a standard mounting width of 20 mm. Accordingly, we can change the bracelets to any others. You can exchange a metal bracelet for a leather strap and vice versa.

But not all metal bracelets can be exchanged for any other. For example, Sony produces the SmartWatch 3 smart watch, where the metal strap is combined with a frame for the gadget itself. Therefore, we can only exchange the bracelet for the original one.

As you understand, a smart watch with a metal bracelet can be safely immersed in water; nothing will happen to the metal.

Well, metal bracelets in themselves also look expensive and presentable. Plus, the metal adds a pleasant heaviness to the wearable gadget and such smart watches look very impressive on the hand.

SILICONE OR RUBBER

And of course, the most popular material for making straps is a special type of rubber or silicone. Smart watches with such straps are usually cheaper than analogues in leather or metal.

Smart watches with such straps can also be safely immersed in water; this material is ideal for an aquatic environment. And of course, all fitness bracelets come with such straps. When playing sports, we move actively and as a result we sweat. After training, rinse your smart watch or fitness bracelet in water and that’s it, no problems!

But smart watches with such straps have one significant point. As a rule, such straps cannot be exchanged for metal or leather; there is no corresponding 20 mm. fastenings

A good example is the Samsung Gear S and Gear S2 smartwatches.

With rare exceptions, the smartwatch manufacturer itself can produce replacement straps, but this happens quite rarely, and finding such straps on sale is quite problematic.

SMART WATCH FUNCTIONALITY

Here we come to the most important point of this article. So why do you still need a smart watch? Is this a useful gadget or just an expensive and useless toy?

The main purpose of a smart watch is to complement the functions of your smartphone, and in some cases, completely replace the smartphone itself.

But how can a smart watch fully replace a smartphone? Yes, very simple! There are smart watches in which you can install a full-fledged SIM card. Such gadgets are produced by Samsung, Bizzaro, and recently Oukitel announced similar smart watches. By installing a SIM card in such gadgets, you can completely abandon your bulky smartphone. After such a simple procedure, the smart watch turns into a full-fledged smartphone on your hand.

Smart watches with a SIM card have a built-in speaker and microphone, therefore, we can talk to the subscriber through such a smart watch, but keep in mind that others can witness your conversation. In such cases, you can use a BT headset or transfer the conversation to the smartphone itself.

A smartwatch with a SIM card, microphone and speaker is very helpful when you are driving. You can answer the call and carry on a conversation without being distracted from the traffic situation.

Now I will tell you about the main functions of smart watches.

Please note that Android Wear watches do not have a built-in speaker and you will not be able to have a full conversation using such a gadget.

The built-in microphone in this case serves for voice control of the smart watch itself. You can use a voice command to call the desired subscriber, receive a call, open the gallery or the desired item on the watch.

When you synchronize your smartwatch and smartphone via BT connection, we get access to the contents of your smartphone.

So, the list of contacts of your smartphone is duplicated on the screen of the smart watch; through the list itself, you can select the desired subscriber and make a call, but in this case we will only talk through the smartphone.

The cold period is approaching and in the cold it is sometimes problematic to take out a smartphone from warm clothes, but with the help of a smart watch, which is always on our hand, we can see who is calling and whether it is worth answering the call at the moment. There is no way to answer, you can reject the call using a template SMS message.

Of course, your smart watch can receive absolutely any notifications or messages, be it WhatsApp, Viber, etc.

You can also send a full message from a smartwatch; a virtual keyboard is used for these purposes.

A smart watch can act as a remote control for MP3 songs downloaded to your smartphone. The name of the track is displayed on the screen of the smart watch, there is rewind, stop and pause. You can also select the desired track from the general list.

Some smartwatch models have a full-fledged GPS module. So in Gear S you can fully use navigation. The GPS module also serves to lay out and track the route if you are engaged in sports walking or running.

Also, some smart watches have a Wi-Fi module, you can use a mobile Internet browser, but as the owner of a Gear S smart watch, I will say that this is not convenient; after all, the smart watch screen is too small for these purposes.

The smartwatch screen can display the weather report that comes from the smartphone.

Many smart watches have built-in memory. You can download music directly to your gadget and listen through BT headphones. By downloading a third-party player, the smartwatch can act as a portable video player.

Of course, all smart watches are a kind of gadget for sports. Smart watches have specialized software installed for these purposes. Smart watches can count your steps using the built-in accelerometer. Some models have a full-fledged heart rate sensor, which actually measures your heart rate during training. Using these sensors, the smartwatch also calculates calories burned and distance traveled. Accordingly, if you are actively involved in sports, I advise you to purchase a smart watch or fitness bracelet with a pulse sensor. Typically, the heart rate sensor is located on the back of a smart watch or fitness bracelet.

This is not all the functionality of a smart watch. If you have an application store, you can download a huge number of different dials to your smartwatch and thereby change the design of your gadget.

You need a calculator, a stopwatch, a timer, all of this can be downloaded and installed on the watch. For example, there are apps that allow you to remotely control your smartphone's camera. You can also download various mini-games to your smartwatch and use them for entertainment.

In fact, there are a huge number of different applications and everyone can find what they need.

AUTONOMOUS OPERATION

The main problem with smartwatches at the moment is their short battery life. The batteries have a capacity from 100 to 420 mAh. Compared to smartphones, this volume is certainly small. The average operating time of a smartwatch is 2-3 days. If you do not use an active BT connection, then battery life can be extended to 4 days, but this is usually the maximum.

Smart watches from Pebble stand out from the general list. These smart watches work for an average of 5-7 days. The credit for this is good optimization, black and white screen, lack of speaker and microphone, energy is essentially spent only on the BT connection. If BT is turned off, these smart watches can work for up to 20 days.

Fitness bracelets are approximately equal in battery life to smart watches. But there is a fitness bracelet from the Jawbone company called “UP Move”. This fitness bracelet uses a CR2032 battery, the battery life with such a battery increases to 180 days, but this is an exception to the rule.

CONCLUSIONS

I hope this article will help the average consumer make the right choice. Personally, I have already made a choice in favor of a smart watch. By the way, there is an excellent mechanical watch at home that is covered with a thick layer of dust. It’s just that a smart watch gives me something that a regular watch can’t give.

Let me finish here, good luck to everyone and see you again!
